FLEMING, JOHN

(REV, PROF, DD, FRSE, 1785-1857)

Born Bathgate, died Edinburgh. Educated Edinburgh University. Presbyterian Minister at Bressay, Shetland and Flisk, Fife. Professor of Natural Philosophy at King’s College, Aberdeen, 1834-45, then Professor of Natural History at Free Church College, Edinburgh.

Author of Flora of West Lothian (1814), Philosophy of Zoology (1822), History of British Animals (1828), Lithology of Edinburgh (1859) and more than 100 other books and papers on geology and zoology.

More than 500 British fossils many with Fleming’s original labels.

Purchased from his son Dr. Andrew Fleming, Indian Army, 1870.

Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum, Kelvingrove

About 800 mineral specimens from Scotland, England, Cornwall, Europe, Iceland, USA, Mexico, Australia, and worldwide. Includes a letter from Hugh Miller to John Fleming, and a typed museum catalogue of the collection.

Donated by Major J. A. Fleming, c/o Captain Fleming, Western Club, Glasgow, 1902.

About 2 400 seaweeds, fungi, lichens, mosses and algae from Scotland, Shetland, Fife, Clackmannan, Edinburgh. Includes letters dated 1843 and 1848 to David Landsborough (1779-1854), expert on non-flowering plants.

402 molluscs, worldwide.

Purchased by James Renny on Fleming’s death and donated to Arbroath Museum. This part was sold to H.G. Watson in 1930 ( The remainder was given to the Royal Scottish Museum in 1972.) and was bought from his son in 1982. Now in Montrose museum.

In the 78 years of the existence of the India Museum, London several important geological collections were passed to the museum. Among them were the Salt Range of Pakistan presented by A. Fleming in the 1850s.
